If you’re on a budget and can only go on one of the ‘pay for admission’ tours, I recommend the Old State House/Boston Massacre Site. When you purchase the self-guided tour, you’re given a character bio, which plays in with all the different exhibits. H- was the Governor of Massachusetts, B- was a colonist who was reluctant to leave his house and ended up being a victim of the Boston Massacre, and I was a Loyalist whose husband was a British soldier who fired the first shot at the Boston Massacre. All three of us really got into our characters and had a blast playing along as we went from exhibit to exhibit in the three-story building.
I have to say, I wasn’t really impressed by Faneuil Hall – possibly because it was around lunchtime, and possibly because I had read the history of this “Cradle of Liberty” beforehand, but I just wasn’t expecting a marketplace. An impressive marketplace, mind you, but ultimately, a marketplace.

Same here. I went there for the first time last year and wasn’t impressed with Faneuil Hall either. Too touristy and kitchy for my taste.
