After finishing up at Cotton Field Trail, I still had some time before work, so I drove over to a separate section of Stones River National Battlefield – the McFadden Farm tour stop, which is where the third day of the fighting took place. The McFadden Farm area is home to the Artillery Monument, as well as two half mile loops which make up the Artillery Trail.
Quite frankly, the star of the proverbial show is the monument and not the trail. Both loops were easy in terms of terrain, but aside from a few mock cannons, there really wasn’t anything to see. The starting point for both loops is the parking lot next to the monument and there’s no one right way to begin. I chose to do the field loop first, and then the more wooded loop second.
